It depends on what type of acne scars you have: either the skin indentations / pits or the dark maroon discolorations.

In either case, exfoliating is very beneficial because it helps to remove the top dead layer of skin gradually. But, be careful not to exfoliate too often or too hard as this will only damage your skin further. This all depends on your skin type.
Dry or sensitive skin – once per week
Oily or combination skin – 3-5 times per week
Normal skin – Every day

If you have the dark maroon discolorations, these are called macules and the good news is that these can fade over time. Sometimes they heal quickly but sometimes they can take a while because the blood vessels that were there slowly die off. The best thing to do is to allow your skin the time to heal from acne so that you don’t get further scarring. If your acne issues are now gone, this is good news. But, if you still deal with acne (even occassionally), you’ll want to take steps to keep it from turning into the scars so your skin can heal.

Here’s what I would suggest:
First, make sure you cleanse your body at least once a day and wash your face twice a day – once in the morning and once at night. Don’t overdo it here (sometimes people shower more often thinking they’ll get rid of the acne by washing it away – you can actually make things worse if you strip away too much of your natural oils because your skin will respond with making more oil – causing more acne.) If, however, you sweat a lot, you may want to wash your skin again (even if it’s just with a wash cloth) – for instance, after playing sports, etc. Wash with a cleanser that YOUR skin responds to. But, do not choose a cleanser that has alcohol in it (as this also causes your skin to dry out and cause more acne). Also, avoid anything with fragrance – this will irritate your skin. Use a gentle cleanser – glycerin based is what I recommend. Glycerin is a natural humectant which means that it naturally draws moisture to your skin (which will help for the dryness). Whatever you choose, make sure it does not have fragrance in it or alcohol. The fragrance will irritate your sensitive skin and make you break out. The alcohol will dry you out – which actually makes you break out (the more you dry out your skin, the more you will break out because your skin will compensate by making more oil – causing more breakouts!) A balance is required here – so watch the ingredients. A simple glycerin soap (no frills or fancy stuff) will do you wonders. Remember, your first step is to cleanse your skin – get rid of the dirt and oil. Simple.

Next, exfoliate on a regular basis! Exfoliating your skin will help remove dead skin cells that get trapped because of too much sebum (oil) on your skin – causing pores to get clogged…thus forming acne. Follow the guide above on how often to exfoliate based on your skin type. Don’t overdo it. You’ll make it worse.

If you have a moisturizer you like and works for you, use it after exfoliating. Once again, careful of the ingredients. If you don’t have one, splash your face with some cool water after you exfoliate and pat dry but leave skin a little moist.

Everyone’s skin is different and everyone responds differently to different treatments. As long as you stay consistent with your skin care regimen and listen to your skin while using the tips above, you will find what works for you and I think you’ll soon see a noticeable improvement in your acne scars (or lack thereof). Good luck!!

Here are some home made remedies for acne in general! : My favorite (and the best working one) has to do with asprine. You get 6 asprine in a small container, like a mini bowl or a lid to something. Add like 3 drops of hot water, then pound it into a paste. DO NOT ADD MORE WATER!!!!!! If you add more water it drips and you get asprin in your eye- owch! Then apply your paste all over your skin, pretty thick, if you have oily skin just apply the rest (ther’ll be leftovers) in a thin layer all over your skin; this’ll dry it out without causing any damage!!!! If you don’t have asprine, here’s another great one: Oatmeal!!!!!! Make a bowl of oatmeal as if you were going to make it… PUT NO SUGAR IN IT!!!!!!!!! If it has sugar it’ll seriously kill your face!!! Then apply it to your face, heaping it onto your forhead I usually leave it until it starts falling off, so it could be awhile! THis next one is NOT for sensative skin- I learned the hard way! YOu delute 1/4 a cup of vinager with 3/4 a cup of water. Leave a cotton ball in it for 3 mins and then rub it all over your face, leave that on for 15 mins, then wash off. If you’re desperate, rub all over face and leave on over night, but that’s kinda risky! This one’s been working for me for a looooong time; leave ice on the pimple for 10 mins every 4 hours! You can make an ice face mask! Speaking of face masks, the’ll really help you!!! My favorite is a face peel, which is where you
Steep your teas separately in half a cup of hot water for each. Squeeze the teabags and set aside about an ounce from each cup of tea.
2
Prepare the cucumber by blending it in the food processor until it is the consistency of a paste. Strain the mixture though a strainer and put the juice aside to use in the rest of the recipe.
3
Heat the tea in a small saucepan. Add the gelatin and stir until the gelatin dissolves.
4
Remove the mixture from the heat and pour it into the glass or ceramic bowl. Add the cucumber juice and aloe vera gel. Mix well.
5
Chill the bowl in the refrigerator until the mixture begins to thicken. This step will take about half an hour.
6
Apply the facial peel to your face and leave mask on for 15 minutes. Peel the mask off after it dries. Use warm water and a washcloth to remove the peel completely.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh! I also use:
Face, morning: Sea Breeze Deep clean astrigent
Face, Night: Deep Clean cream cleanser, by Neutrogena,
Body: SHOWER!: Japanese Cherry blossom shower gel from bath and bodyworks!!!!
