Acne Treatments At Home

Susan asks…

What acne treatment has worked best for you?

For mild to severe acne? I have it all over my cheeks and a bit on my forehead, and i’m really just wanting my face back. Is there any product i definitely need to try?

admin answers:

Hi Aimee,

I was also in your position facing problem choosing the suitable product for acne, i tried various products, some works some don’t i tried some home remedies for acne, you can also try out these remedies.

1. Do not pick, press or rub your pimples. These things generally increase the sebum production and rupture the membranes below your skin. The infection and sebum will reach below your skin and result in more pimples. Also, you risk increasing the chances of leaving scars on your face.

2. Wash your face twice a day using a mild soap. It is even better if you can get sulfur-based soap especially for acne. If your skin is too oily, use a soap with benzoyl peroxide. Do not use brushes, rough sponges or anything same on your face. You shouldn’t, though, over-wash your face because it will actually stimulate your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum which will add to your acne.

3. Check if it is because of the food. For several people, food allergy can cause very severe acne problem. You should avoid taking in too much oily and spicy food. Most recent studies have proven that acne can also be caused by milk which includes hormones as well as seafood with pretty higher levels of iodine. If feasible, cut down on those foods. Some other foods you may consider staying away from are: dairy products, meat, sugar, deep-fried food, nut butters, etc. On the other hand, it is considered that green vegetables, vegetable juices and foods rich in zinc can help ease acne problem.

4. Every day drink more water. “Eight glasses of water a day can keep acne away.” says acne expert. The point is that water can carry waste substance out of our body and it really helps treat and stop acne flare-ups.

5. If possible do not wear makeup. Makeup products can block your pores, result in more blackheads and pimples. If you have to wear makeup, make sure it is water-based. Be sure to clean your makeup brushes regularly and clean your skin prior to you sleep.

6. Do not apply oily products. Avoid goods such as intense oil-based facial moisturizers, hair pomades, and oily cleansers.

7. Keep your face clean. Do not lay your chin on your hands or constantly touch your face. Routinely shampoo your hair and keep it off your face, especially when you sleep.

8. Exercise moderately as it helps in blood circulation and elimination of toxins.

9. Stay stress-free. Research have revealed that stress not only worsens acne flare-up, it also worsens the overall skin condition. Talk to your friends, listen to your favorite music, or take a walk in the park. There are many things you can do to be stress free.
10. Get Sunshine and fresh air. Sunshine stimulates vitamin D in the body, an vital vitamin for healthy skin. Fresh air and sunshine can also reduce stress (tip #9) and increase oxygen to the skin. Don’t get burnt in the sun though. Burnt and heavily tanned skin forms a layer on the skin that doesn’t exfoliate quickly enough and can lead to blocked pores.

Helen asks…

How can I make a home-made acne treatment?

I’d like to make something to treat my acne, whether it’s a mask, an exfoliating scrub, or a wash. Thank you in advance!

admin answers:

An oatmeal mask is soothing for the face and easy to make. Grind a handful of oatmeal in a blender or coffee grinder. Mix the oatmeal powder with a little water, apply to your face and lay down.

Sharon asks…

How to get rid of back acne (home remedies)?

I have a school dance on the 11th, and I have mild back acne. I found the dress of my dreams, but it is strapless, and open-backed. Please help me. I want it mostly gone for the dance.

admin answers:

Bellestrar; try this:

Acne does not only confine to appearing at our face. It can also appear at other places like the neck, shoulder and back area. Treating back acne is similar to treating facial acne but additional steps need to be taken. Here are some tips that you can include in your back acne treatment regime.

1. Wear loose clothing

Tight clothing tends to absorb our perspiration and they also make it stick to the skin. This can cause our skin to have difficulty breathing. When dirt and perspiration are trapped and stick on to the skin, it can cause irritation and may aggravate your acne condition.

Wearing loose clothing can help to prevent further irritation to your skin. It also allows your skin to breathe hence lessening the chances of pores blockage.

2. Medication

I only use natural ingredients to help me cure my acne now and tea tree oil is a great ingredient. It consist of anti bacteria properties and it can help to kill off the bacteria that are in your acne. It is only a 100% natural ingredient hence there are definitely no side effects as compared to conventional products in the market that are using harsh chemicals.

3. Practice good hygiene

Back acne treatment does not include only medications and your hygiene habits play a part too. It is recommended that you take a shower once you finish a work out or return from home after a long day. Sleeping immediately without taking a shower can cause the dirt and perspiration to stick on to your skin for a long period of time. This can result in more acne break outs.

You should also change your bed sheet regularly and try not to re-wear clothes that were worn before. Wear a clean set of clothes every day and you can prevent dirt and bacteria to have contact with your skin.

Effective back acne treatment

On top of these tips, it is also recommended that you keep a look out on your diet. Avoid eating junk foods and eat more natural food such as vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. These are healthy foods that contain lots of essential nutrients and minerals that can help to keep your body immune system strong to prevent back acne break outs.

Get Rid Of Acne Fast

Paul asks…

How to get rid of acne?

So I have been getting some really bad acne all of a sudden , and in my opinion it’s gross ! Any healthy non-expensive natural way to get rid of acne sorta fast ?

admin answers:

I personally use:
St. Ives Apricot Scrub
Then, I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash to get all of the yuckyness off my face.
You don’t have to use a facial scrub everyday, but if your face is getting bad then I definetly would. Don’t use ANY liquid foundation. ONLY powder. Mineral powder.
Very light coverup as well. Your face needs to breathe, if if doesn’t breathe. Then well, there’s acne for ya…

Michael asks…

How can I get rid of acne, fast?

I am going to a heeuuge Christmas party in December, the 21st to be exact, and I want to get rid of any acne I have by then. I’ve already tried Differin, AcneFree, and a few other things. And Proactiv. Proactiv worked the best, but the results only lated for a few weeks. I want to get rid of it completely. Anyone have any suggestions? I’d really appreciate it, thanks!

admin answers:

Well the basics r wash your face twice a day.
I went to the doctor and got a benzol perioxide thing(high doesage). I got results in two weeks.
Now with some skin types you can blot oil during the day.
Try not to wear makeup for a while if you do wear it . I kno it can seem embarassing but trust me most of the time makeup like foundation and conceler looks fake. It will clear up.
Try cucumber face it look gross when you take it off.

For your acne wash your face every morning and night with a hot washcloth and before you go to sleep put Campho Phenique over your face as you would lotion. Drink lots of water and have a healthy diet and your acne should clear in a few days. Also you can try something called the oil cleansing method.

Treatments For Acne On Face

Richard asks…

I want to get rid of my acne, what should I do differently?

I am 14 years old and have moderate acne. I play a lot of sports. I want to get rid of it, but I don’t know how. I use several products like: Astringent, Face wash, Spot on Acne Treatment, and a face mask. I wash my face 3-5 times a day and shower 1-2 a day. What should I do differently and how can I get rid of my acne and blackheads?

admin answers:

You should deffinitly NOT wash your face 3-5 times a day! That is way to much! Your skin will dry out, therefore causing a message to your oil glands to produce even more oil, and you end up with even more acne. The maxium amount you should wash your face per day is 1-3. I recommend only 1-2. I only wash my face once a day, at night to remove my makeup. I feel if I wash my face in the morning, it opens up my pores and by the end of the day my pores are clogged. I only use my Noxzema triple clean anti-blemish pads. They work so good! They have cleared up my face (for the most part) and I only usually use them at night, sometimes in the morning if I feel my face feels dirty. They have 2% salycilic acid, and overall, it’s just a great product. You don’t have to use this, But you don’t need all the acne treatments. I wash with only cerave or just water.

Mandy asks…

What are some homemade remedies for acne?

Chest acne…back acneface acne…it’s bad

I don’t want to hear toothpaste or anything stupid. I’ve tried that

Please homemade i don’t want to go buy stuff because I’ve tried a lot of over the counter products and none of them work.

admin answers:

I know you’re looking for home remedies but it really would be best to go see your doctor – I agree – don’t waste time with over the counter stuff – getting something on prescription will be much more effective though.

I used to have very bad skin and did try home remedies too but nothing helped.

The doctor can offer a number of treatments – hope this might help you a little :)

Antibiotics or topical treatments like benzyl peroxide will kill the P.acnes bacteria on your skin.

Retinoids are available which affect cell turnover and will therefore help to stop pores getting blocked with dead skin cells. I use a topical Retin A gel (also called tretinoin or isotrex) which I’d definitely recommend.

It is possible to use more than one treatment at the same time, which may help to get a better result. Just remember that with anything you try you need to allow at least a month to see significant results.

The mini pill is also very effective for many girls too – it helped improve my skin a lot ( I was prescribed Dianette).

Don’t overdo cleaning your face – using something that is mild and for sensitive skin is best – as drying out your skin by using harsh cleansers (or even by using very hot then very cold water) will only stimulate the oil glands to produce more oil/sebum – and its the oil and dead skin cells which block your pores (when P.acnes bacteria gets trapped in these blocked pores this is when redness and inflammation occurs)

Also – if you use makeup check that it is non comedogenic (won’t block pores) as otherwise it will aggrevate the problem.

There will be a treatment that will work for you – it just might take a little time – I hope you do find a solution soon – I know how upsetting it can be.

James asks…

What acne products work the absolute best?

I used to have flawless skin almost always, now i get horrible dark red breakouts. I also keep getting marks from previous acne. I wash my face every night and use a spot treatment. I also wash my face every morning and use a salicylic acid moisterizer before i put on makeup because i have dry skin. Its not working. What should i do?

admin answers:

The best acne products would be the ones you get from the doctor by prescription. If that’s not an option, try Proactive.

Maria asks…

According to their commercials, which OTC acne treatment works better than Proactiv?

I recently caught the end of an over the counter acne treatment commercial claiming to work better than Proactiv Solution. I have used the latter for years and love it, but wouldn’t mind saving some money!!! The problem is, I can’t remember what the new brand is. . . .
Thanks for your input!

Do I apply my acne treatment before or after I moisturize?

My acne treatment is Patricia Wexler MD Dermatology Acne spot treatment, it has 10% benozyl peroxide and I think it’s sulfur based. When putting lotion after I apply it, it’s hard to put it on since it has these tiny beads.

admin answers:

I usually moisturize my skin after I put on the stuff .

Can acne treatments make my hair fall out?

I’ve been using an oil free acne wash twice a day and my hair started falling off. Is it because of the acne treatment? Because i use it on my forehead and it gets in my hair sometimes. I’m fourteen by the way.

Thanks ya’ll! :)
Kylie: OTHER than that! I need stuff that works.. I ALREADY do that.

admin answers:

Well im in the process of getting rid of my acne and basically what im doing is really not worrying about it….i just deal with it….you are probably at the stage where you get acne….just go through it….all i do is wash my face with soap….i just put soap on my hands and rub it on my face gently and smoothly. After that i just put lotion on my face..i use suave lotion i think its the best lotion and the cheapest….basically forget about your acne, the more you worry the more you get…eat about 2-3 apples a day if you can eat more AND IMPORTANTLY DRINK WATER!! REPLACE SODA WITH WATER DO NOT DRINK SODA, EAT HEALTHY, STOP GOING TO FAST FOOD PLACES, YOUR KITCHEN IS THE HEALTHIEST PLACE(if your mexican like me =D)….do not use any kind of acne products…..and another big tip is dont look at yourself in the mirror so much….the more you look the more you get worried.

Lisa asks…

What brand is better neutrogena or clean and clear?

For getting rid of acne the fastest?

admin answers:

Neutrogena works the best for me.

The four neutrogena products that I use are-
1) Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash- orange bottle
2) Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner- blue bottle
3) Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer- white bottle
4) Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment- small, white package

Wash your face twice a day (morning and night) and do this-
1) Wash face with Oil-Free Acne Wash (orange bottle), dry with clean towel
2) Damp a cotton ball with some Alcohol-Free Toner (blue bottle) and rub all over face
3) Use a pump of the Oil-Free Moisturizer and rub it into your face
4) Use a tiny dot of the On-the-Spot Acne Treatment on the specific problem pimples- DON’T rub it all over your face
5) (do this all day) drink lots of fresh water to remove acne-causing toxins from your body

This is targeted to gently clean your face without over-medicating it with unnecessary acne medications that can irritate acne and make it even worse!
Note: Even if you have oily skin, you must use a moisturizer! If you don’t, more oil is produced on skin that thinks it’s dry.

THIS REALLY WORKS FOR ANY TYPE OF ACNE- FROM LIGHT TO SEVERE! It’s gentle enough for light acne, yet potent enough for severe. You should really try this. It’s inexpensive and fast!

Jenny asks…

How do you clear body acne quickly?

I have a dance coming up in two weeks and I’ll be wearing a dress that shows my upper back. How do I get rid of body acne, and fast?

admin answers:

It really depends on how bad your acne is. If the acne is severe or the “cystic” type, then you are going to need to visit a dermatologist and get a prescription for it. If it is mostly minor, like whiteheads or blackheads, then your best bet is going to be a mixture of a good cleanser with exfoliators, a toner (if you have oily skin), and a zit cream (preferrably with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid). You can try a variety of products, or you could buy all three products in a kit. Most drug stores sell the kits that contain all three products and can be found in the skin care aisle. Or my personal favorite is Proactiv. It’s kind of expensive, but it started clearing up my skin in a matter of days. It worked very quickly and it made my skin soft and smooth. I use the facial treatment on my face, chest, and back and have had great results. Proactiv also makes a special kit for treatment on your body other than your face, but I have never tried it, so I don’t know how effective it is.

There have also been new studies that have been released that say that dairy products can cause breakouts and flare ups. It is supposed to be because of the hormones in most dairy products. It doesn’t affect everyone, but you could maybe stay away from it for a little while to see if it helps you or not.

Best of luck and enjoy the dance!

Treatments For Acne Marks

Paul asks…

Can you help me out with removing facial hair?

How to remove facial hair?
Guys please help me out. I am a girl, 17 years old. I am really very sad because of so many hairs on my face. I feel so under confident. I bleach my face, but that is actually irritating. I have to bleach in every 3-4 days, which has further resulted into acne & marks all over my face.

If you can’t tell some way to remove those hairs, kindly tell me how to reduce them. Please help me out. :(

Thank You.

admin answers:

Don’t bleach your facial hair. And don’t shave either, it makes your hair appear thicker and darker…
It’s not very good for your skin, and you’d notice after a while…

Why don’t you wax?
Or if not, Laser (IPL) is a much better option.
It is permanent, and you only need about 6 treatments, less if you only want to reduce the growth.
A bit painful (Like a elastic band snapping on your skin),
A little bit expensive (But add up the cost of bleach or waxing your whole life and Laser would be cheaper!)

But definately worth it for the results.

Hope that helps?

Michael asks…

would microdermabrasion help my light acne scars?

I have acne marks left from acne a couple months ago and have a couple really light acne scars that are very small and not deep at all. They have faded a lot by using other products. Would using microdermabrasion help get rid of the marks and the scars? After how many treatments would i see results? I also drink a lot of water and eat a lot of fruits and veggies.

admin answers:

Niacinamide face cleansing pads are effective and simple way to keep acne away. Just place a pad on the pimple and watch it fade away. Lavender Oil helps prevent skin drying.
Niacinamide pads are also known as Vitamin B3 pads or Nicotinamide pads. Works on body acne too.
Give them a try and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Niacinamide also helps diminish skin-hyperpigmentation (acne scars).

Daniel asks…

What product should i use to clear breakouts?

I was thinking about using either Clearasil-Ultra® Acne + Marks Wash and Mask
Clearasil-Ultra® Overnight Scrub

I’m thinking about getting the overnight scrub first and see if it works, if not I’ll probably try the masks out. And I heard that the scrub helps clear light acne. But I don’t know. Any advice on which is better.
Or recommend any better creams?

admin answers:

You will need a good moisturizer after all that cleaning. Gud Luk…..P

Melody posted this recently about Coconut Oil.

I recommend You moisturize your skin with organic unrefined extra virgin coconut oil. I know you might be like, is she crazy telling me to put OIL on my face? NO i am not crazy:) All of my Friends use coconut oil for their body, hair, health and skin. And their skin and mine is very healthy. Coconut oil even helped one of my Friend who suffered acne for about 1 year. She started using coconut oil everyday as a moisturizer, and now she has clear skin! She still had to use a cleanser, and eat healthy and stuff. But COCONUT oil helps the body, skin and hair in SO many ways!

I found out coconut oil is a very effective way to treat acne. I use the organic USDA, unrefined, and extra virgin coconut oil. And it smells sooo good!!! It does not clog pores, well it does not to me. It give you a natural glow, cure redness, acne, acne scar, dryness, wrinkle, fine lines, oiliness, and any skin condition like rash! It 10 times as better than other acne treatments! Coconut oil is a very great natural way to cure acne. Use it as your facial moisturizer.

Thanks Melody……P

Acne Treatments For Men

Nancy asks…

What are some good ways to cure acne?

I have a lot of acne and I have tried many ways to lessen it. I have used various different types of soaps to try and get rid of it. But, unfortunately none of them worked for a long period of time. I am currently using ProActive and I have been using it for about 3 weeks. So far, I am seeing no changes and my acne is not getting any better. Please recommend some kind of soap or inform me of some way that I can get rid of my acne. Thanks :)

admin answers:

Okay man i will tell you something you dont want to hear but, I am telling you straight up, stick with it for 3 months. Trust me that there is no fast cure for acne. I tried Proactive for one month and a half and decided to stop. I regret stopping since Now After Retin-A micro treatments and a months use of Differin gel that was reccommended to me by my dermatologist I look awful. I dont reccommend anyone using Retin-A nor differin since you will get deep scars. I should have sticked with Pro Active. Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5 percent is the way to go and proactive has that.(in my view there will be nothing better out there than 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide). DOnt quit Pro Active . DO your self a favor and stick with it. IF in 3 months you are not satified then I dont know what is out there man. Everything Else i have tried Except Accutane, But accutane is the worst you can go.

Now I am at the point where if My Retin-A stops working I will ask for birth controll pills (keep in mind I am a guy) I heard that they work by stopping excess hormonal production that may cause my acne, but this is one of those extreme cases. Also I am now really trying to eat healthy and stopped eating all kinds of junk food even fast food. (Okay i let myself eat one hamburger a month but that is it)

Even by using Retin-A micro, Differin, Clean&Clear, OxyClean, Stridex, Clearasil, Murad, and Neutrogena( I liked the Acne on the Spot treatment), I think I am going to maybe one day go back to proactive.
O and Atibiotics such as minocycline helped me in decreasing the size of my pimples, but my dumb dermatologist said that i didnt need them anymore.(If you ever go to a dermatologist never let them prescribe you a topical gel without antibiotics or else that initial breakout will hurt you so much.)

but yeah stick with proactive man, I even want to go back to that.

Daniel asks…

What treatments are available for Back acne?

How do you treat or prevent serious back acne….Any of the shelf products available? Can this be cured by prescription only? Any advice to a daily cleansing regiment?

Sandy asks…

What is the best cleanser for me to use?

I need a cleanser for cleansing my face, here is what I need in the cleanser:

- I need it to remove my pimples
- Help with acne
- Make my face less dry

Any cleanser for boys that I can use? I am 13 years old by the way.
I also live in Australia.

The active ingredient you’re looking for in any “acne” face cleanser is benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid; both of them have been proven to effectively treat acne; however it is important to use a daily moisturizer (preferably with SPF) as many of acne treatment products dry out the skin.
Clean and Clear make a great range of products for skin prone to break outs, so does Nitrogen. If you’re willing to spend a little more, Clinique also makes a great range of men’s products that can help clear up your skin.
Acne is caused by bacteria, so in addition to using a great cleanser, you also want to be mindful of keeping your face clean; making sure you wash it at least twice a day and make sure you don’t touch your face with dirty hands or unsanitary items.
